Four Forests Near Evergreen

August 1, 2024

Surrounded by trees and filled with trails and green spaces, Evergreen is a paradise for nature lovers. But when wanderlust takes hold of you, Evergreen is surrounded by four beautiful forests allowing you to hike, bike, camp and wander to your heart’s content. Here’s what’s nearby:

Sam Houston National Forest

Mere minutes from Evergreen. Sam Houston National Forest is one of only four national forests in Texas. One of the big attractions is the award-winning 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail. The trail is rarely crowded, and hikers have opportunities to enjoy many different species of animal and plant life. There are three developed campgrounds. Cagle Recreation Area is the forest’s newest campground, featuring a boat ramp, full-service hook-ups, hot showers and more. Visitors also enjoy picnicking, horseback riding, cycling, hunting and more. One more thing — Montgomery County Texas has more Bigfoot sightings than any other place in Texas, just in case you are interested.

W. G. Jones State Forest

Home to the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpeckers, W.G. Jones State Forest is a favorite with birdwatchers. The purpose of this demonstration forest is to test various forest management techniques, forest genetics and forest product utilization studies. It’s also a great place for a day hike or horseback ride with approximately 15 miles of trails. Several demonstration gardens and growing areas can be toured. There are also picnic tables and a fishing pond.

Huntsville State Park

If you’re in the mood to travel a little farther, Huntsville State Park is about 30 miles north of Conroe. An idyllic place to camp, Hunsville is known for the beauty of its Pineywoods. There are 21 miles of trails to explore. Abundant campsites are available for those interested in spending the weekend. Fishers, kayakers and swimmers will love 210-acre Lake Raven. A nature center offers opportunities to learn more about the surrounding wildlife.

Lake Livingston State Park

Located less than an hour away from Evergreen, Lake Livingston State Park is a tranquil retreat located on the shores of one of Texas’ largest lakes. Known for its white bass population, Lake Livingston is the perfect spot for anglers hoping to tell a few fish stories. The park has three boat ramps, two fish cleaning stations, a fishing pier and bank fishing. Families not into fishing can kayak, camp, geocache, hike, bike and picnic.
