Exciting news for Evergreen — not only has a new Conroe ISD elementary school broken ground in the community, but the school now has a name — Campbell Elementary.
Conroe Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null, other school officials, members of the Lake Conroe/Conroe Chamber of Commerce, Buck Diggers with Cooper Rose and representatives from Evergreen were on hand June 13 for the groundbreaking of the new onsite elementary school.
At 150,000 square feet, Campbell Elementary is designed to serve a maximum of 950 students. Early plans call for the school to house grades kindergarten through sixth, although that won’t be finalized until zoning is complete later this year. The school is anticipated to open for the 2025-2026 school year.
Campbell Elementary is named for Mittie J. Campbell, who was the first Black woman to serve as a principal in Conroe ISD. She began her career instructing teachers of the Texas Colored Teacher’s Institute in 1898. In 1916, she became the first assistant in Conroe’s Black public school and taught sixth through eighth grades. After Professor Ewart G. Abner, principal at the school, joined the Army in 1917, the school board chose Campbell to succeed him. She continued to teach even while serving as principal, and the Black school under construction on the city’s south side was named for her in 1918. In 1927, the school board decided to rename schools after prominent figures, so the Mittie J. Campbell School became Booker T. Washington.
“We’re excited to bring the convenience of an onsite school to our growing number of residents,” said Keith Luechtefeld, Houston Division President for Shea Homes, developer of Evergreen. “It won’t be long before there will be parents walking their children to school and enjoying the other benefits of an onsite campus.”
Campbell Elementary is one of eight new schools funded through a $1.9 billion bond referendum passed last November. In addition to the eight new schools, the bond includes expansions and renovations at several existing campuses and $40 million for technology enhancements and the purchase of devices such as iPads, laptops and desktop computers.
